Day 046 - On The Key Assumptions of NLP

Thursday, February 15, 2024

In the Oxford dictionary a presupposition is “a thing tacitly assumed beforehand at the beginning of a line of argument or course of action.

In the field of linguistics known as pragmatic, a presupposition is an implicit assumption about the world or background belief relating to an utterance whose truth is taken for granted in discourse.

In layman's terms, it means something is assumed to be true, i.e. presupposed, in order for the sentence, statement, or belief to be true.

To give an example:
Nate no longer speaks French, presupposes that there is someone named Nate, he speaks, and he once spoke French, but he doesn’t speak it any longer.

It's a good practice to know what your presuppositions are and what the presuppositions are of those around you.

The more you can bring things into your conscious awareness the more you can understand how you and those around you construct their thinking.

In Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) there are 8 Core Presuppositions, and I’ve listed them below.

In future Reflections, I reflect on each one individually, but I felt it would be helpful to share them all in a single Reflection so you can consider them as a whole.

As you read through these Reflect on how your world might look different if you were to take these on as presuppositions of your own.

KEY ASSUMPTIONS OF NLP

  • The ability to change the process by which we experience reality is often more valuable than changing the content of our experience of reality.
  • The meaning of communication is the response you get.
  • All distinctions human beings are able to make concerning our environment and our behavior can be usefully represented through the visual, auditory, kinesthetic, olfactory and gustatory senses.
  • The resources an individual needs to effect a change are already within them.
  • The map is not the territory.
  • The positive worth of the individual is held constant, while the value and appropriateness of internal and/or external behavior is questioned.
  • There is a positive intention motivating every behavior; and a context in which every behavior has value.
  • Feedback vs. Failure - All results and behaviors are achievements, whether they are desired outcomes for a given task/context or not.

I’ve found that reflecting on any one of these eight could have a significant impact on the way you approach the world around you.

How you think. How you act. How you feel. All of it.

I encourage you to take some time and really reflect on this list. Journal about each point and see how things change and what you experience.

Death - Before - Dishonor

To your success,

Nate
