Day 004 - On Questions To Reflect On

Thursday, January 04, 2024

Do you have a series of questions you use for reflection?

One of the books that inspired me to share these daily reflections was Og Mandino’s - The Greatest Salesman in the World, Part II: The End of The Story. In it he shares the 10 Vows of Success, with the 9th vow being Always will I examine, each night, my deeds of the fading day.

If you haven’t read The Greatest Salesman In The World, I’d highly recommend reading both parts 1 and part 2, but for now, let me share of few excerpts from the ninth vow…

“The very worth of my vices and bad habits will abate of themselves if they are brought to an account every day.”

Imagine what it would be like to rid yourself of any vices or bad habits simply by making this a practice and letting your brain do it’s thing while you sleep!

“Questions form in my head with little prompting:

  • What infirmity have I mastered today?
  • What passion opposed?
  • What temptation resisted?
  • What virtue acquired?

… Let me review my actions, let me observe myself as my greatest enemy might do and I will become my own best friend…

… What have I left undone which out to be done? What have I done which could have been done better?…

… Today’s work will be surpassed tomorrow. It cannot be otherwise. Improvement forever follow examination and review. Everyone should be wiser today than yesterday…

  • Did I survive the day without pitying myself?
  • Did I greet the dawn with a map and a goal?
  • Was I pleasant and agreeable to all I met?
  • Did I attempt to go the extra mile? Did I remain alert for opportunities?
  • Did I search for the good in every problem?
  • Did I smile in the faces of anger and hatred?
  • Did I concentrate my strength and purpose?

What can be more profitable than this daily review of my life so that I can live it with pride and satisfaction? No longer will my day end when the sun sets. There is now, one more act to perform. Always will I examine, each night, my deeds of the fading day.”

When we reflect back on our day we begin to set our plans in motion for tomorrow. The above is just a piece of what I’ll be using to guide my reflections as I take on various challenges throughout my journey.

What questions will you leverage to reflect, improve, and adjust course?

To your success,

Nate
