What could be more telling of the future than the past?
Many times in life, we tend to look for historical evidence that proves we’re capable of doing something. I recently experienced this while setting goals for the upcoming year.
I set some rather ambitious goals, and my brain immediately kicked in saying “you can’t do that” and “we’ve never even come close to that, how do you expect to do that now”.
And while some may allow their brain to stop them, I see it as an opportunity to ask a better question.
I’ve not done it, but is there anyone else who has? Are there people within my current network who have? Would they be willing to either share with me how they did it, or hold me accountable to figuring it out for myself and mentoring me along the way?
Is there someone I could hire to accomplish it for me? If not, is there someone I could hire to do some of the other tasks I do so I can free up more time to figure things out?
If the answer is no, are there steps I can take to turn one or more of these answers from a “no” to a yes”.
Are these goals worth pursuing? What would I have to be willing to give up in order to reach or exceed them? What am I not willing to give up along the way?
What will happen when I do? What won’t happen when I do? What will happen if I don’t? What won’t happen if I don’t?
By going through these questions, and reflecting on my answered I was able to find a path forward. It might not be perfect, and I’ll certainly have interim steps I’ll need to figure out along the way, but the very next step is clear.
I can now take that step, and then the next, and the next one after that.
So the next time you find yourself pursuing an “impossible” goal, ask yourself these questions. Find your next step, then take it!
To your success,
Nate
