Day 011 - On Email Being Under Leveraged

Could email be one of the most under leveraged tools in business?

One of the things I’ve been pondering lately is the value of effective email communication, and how many people actually get it right.

Disclaimer - I am not saying I’ve got it figured out, only that I’ve recognized patterns that are worth noting.

If you’ve ever considered the money period there’s a weird paradoxical phenomena that occurs across time and space.

It typically consists of:

01% - Those doing the absolute best.

04% - Those doing extremely well but not quite top.

15% - Certainly pro’s but haven’t quite reached elite status.

40% - The middle of the road.

40% - The bottom/unsuccessful at the moment.

You’ll notice that this is consistent with the Pareto Principle/ 80/20 Rule with the top 1%, 4%, and 15% making up the 20% and the middle and bottom 40% making up the 80%.

I’ve also found that these classifications exist within each section in and of itself, meaning that within the 1% there’s a breakdown of 1%, 4%, 15%, 40%, and 40%.

It’s a natural order that I’ve found seems to take place in email communication as well.

01% - You look forward to receiving and read as soon as you notice them.

04% - You look forward to receiving and will likely read within a short period of time.

15% - You’re happy to receive, and will get around to reading them eventually.

40% - You’re not excited about, but won’t go through the effort of unsubscribing for one reason or another.

40% - You happily unsubscribe from because they annoy you in one way or another.

Now that we have a classification system it’s easy to start analyzing what makes an email fall within the various categories and what makes them unique.

The next question is which category would your emails fall into and what steps could you take to consistently move them from one category up to the next.

Part of it has to do with the urgency and purpose of the email, another the value it brings to the reader, and finally theirs the uniqueness of the raeder themselves.

That’s why cultivating a list of randomly collected individuals without a unique defining quality makes crafting compelling messaging so incredibly difficult.

I’m still figuring this out for myself, but if you had to think about it for your emails, which category would you place them in?
