Do you remember the movie The Field of Dreams and the infamous phrase that came from it?
“If you build it they will come”.
The reality is that the phrase is both right and wrong simultaneously. It’s a dichotomy of sorts.
If you build it, there is no guarantee that people will come, have interest, or stick around.
However, if you don’t build it then there’s no place for people to come, be interested in, or stick around for.
This leaves us with a choice we all must face.
Do I build the thing? What if I build it and no one wants it? Will I have traded my time, energy, and effort for nothing?
Here’s my take…
If you build it, at the very least you have the opportunity to learn from the process.
Did what I build connect with my audience? If so, did it connect with the right audience for me, or did I just connect with people in general? Am I building in a way that’s sustainable and I’ll be able to keep up with it for the foreseeable future or am I boxing myself in? If things aren’t landing, aren’t resonating, and aren’t building the way I want them to, do I have the mental fortitude and intelligence to learn, pivot, adapt and overcome any challenges currently standing in the way of growing this thing I’ve built?
These are all questions we have to ask ourselves when we first commit to building “the thing”.
Because without this foresite, without this commitment, we could start building something that crumbles before it ever gets off the ground.
My suggestion is this: start building today, but keep an eye out for ways to learn and adapt what you're building in order to create the results you want.
When you do this, and combine it with the resolve to make it work no matter what, you’ve just started building something unstoppable.
To your success,
Nate
