I was in the crowd at Funnel Hacking Live when it hit me like a ton of bricks.

We are all either slingshots or catapults!

A select few, highly successful entrepreneurs are what I like to call slingshots.

A slingshot, specifically here in the US, is a small Y-shaped device with some sort of elastic sling attached to it that you can project things from. While it can cause some serious damage, it’s limited by its size, lack of foundation, and relatively limited amount of tension that can be applied.

So, the slingshot entrepreneur is someone who has little or no foundation when they start, but they find a way to apply tension and propel themselves forward. If you’ve ever heard a successful entrepreneur tell you how tough their lives were growing up, or how they went bankrupt, had their car repossessed, etc… These are the slingshots.

Catapults on the other hand are built with a solid foundation and are designed to apply mechanical tension in order to throw large projectiles over great distances. They evolved over the years as the foundational learnings were changed and adapted through years of trial and error. Thus each generation of catapults became stronger and more powerful. This is how I see the majority of the middle class.

Unfortunately, the majority doesn’t see themselves this way, so they ignore the foundations they’ve been gifted and neglect to figure out ways to build in mechanical tension and launch.

Slingshots can learn to be catapults, and broken catapults can become slingshots. But it's those who use the foundations of the past to learn, adapt, grow, and build themselves into something better than the previous generation who launch into the future!

Be the catapult.

​Use the foundations you’ve been gifted. Find ways to create tension for yourself. And watch how far you’ll go!
