Ok, so this one’s a bit of a rant… you’ve been warned!!!
Someone asked me the other day why most companies don’t have good mentoring programs.
My honest answer — because they just don’t care!
A simple google search and you can find hours worth of reading on the subject and multiple softwares designed to help with the process.
However, the corporate world would be well served to consider the example of the U.S. Military and in particular that of the Marines.
You can google, Marine Corps Mentoring Program and you’ll have access to multiple documents outlining the entire process the Marine Corps follows on mentoring.
These documents cover both formal and informal mentoring and at various rank structures throughout one's career.
Search a little harder and you’ll come across the Marine Leaders Notebook which is literally the day-to-day guidelines for leading Marines.
Search even deeper and you’ll come across Leading Marines, which is a publication the Marine Corps put out on everything to do with leadership and how it expects Marines to lead both in combat and at home.
Now, you might be thinking that it’s easy for me because I was in the Marines and in a way you’d be right.
However, I’ve never once hesitated to share these suggestions or resources and have written and spoken about them publicly on many occasions.
They’re literally accessible via google. And, they’re required reading for Marines who want to progress to certain points within their careers.
Now, image what would happen if a company opted to model a program like this and made it a fundamental way of doing business.
Where each employee was assigned a mentor. Where each mentor had been trained in coaching, mentoring, leading, the ethos, and core values of the company.
Where OJT wasn’t just a new salesperson, buying agent, or engineering hoping that someone would show them the ropes, but it was part of their job to do so.
How much different would those companies be?
How many more people would want to work for those companies?
The fact is, they just don’t care. And that’s that.
To your success,
Nate
