Have you ever wished you could be more disciplined? Or maybe there’s something you’re currently addicted to that you’d like to give up?
Well guess what??? You are both disciplined and addicted whether you believe it or not.
Discipline and addiction are two sides of the same coin.
I’m both disciplined at getting up early and working out and addicted to it at the same time.
I’m both disciplined at taking my husky for his daily 3 mile walk and addicted to it at the same time.
I’m both addicted to my morning coffee disciplined around prepping it the night before.
I’m both addicted to watching tv at night and disciplined around watching it before I go to bed.
This got me thinking, what would happen if we looked at all of our habits as both disciplines and addictions?
Would that change the way our brain looks at things?
For instance, what if instead of being disciplined about watching tv at night, I got addicted to reading, learning, studying, and connecting with my wife. It’s a great discipline, but being addicted to it sounds even better.
Or what if I recognized that being addicted to my morning walks makes it a compulsory act whether I’m home or on the road.
Is this a good thing or are there cases where my addiction could impede my success.
Take a moment to flip things around for yourself.
Are your disciplines worth having? Are you addictions advantageous?
What would happen if you looked at the things you want to be disciplined around and figured out what’s needed to make them an addiction? A compulsion within yourself?
Would you have more flexibility if you took your disciplines and gave yourself permission to change?
These are all things we have to keep in mind, and constantly be asking ourselves in order to make progress every single day.
So what would the shift be for you?
To your success,
Nate
