One question that’s come up for me as I’ve been iterating on the DIA framework and philosophy is how we best leverage it in our daily lives.
Time is the currency of living so how you spend your time is of pivotal importance to your success.
Invest your time in the wrong direction and you’ve just wasted currency you can’t get back. Learn from it and you just might recoup some of your investment.
The best, most effective way I’ve found to do this is through journaling.
In fact, my journey with journaling is a great example of the DIA framework in action.
I first set a direction that I wanted to be the type of person who journaled, as many of the greatest minds throughout history were known to journal.
Take Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations, the inspiration for naming this Reflections, and you have one of the most powerful men in history as your example.
Over the years I’ve been through several different journaling practices, each one having its own benefits but neither providing exactly what I was looking for.
Have you experienced something similar?
If so, I get it.
That’s why I started implementing DIA as my journaling framework.
Each morning I leverage my journaling to direct my mind on who I want to be, what I want to accomplish, and how I’ll know that I’ve lived up to the person I want to be and accomplished what I want to accomplish.
This sets my direction for the day and begins the process of iteration.
In the evening, I reflect back on my day, how well I lived up to who I want to be, and how successfully I’ve accomplished what I set out to do. I then reflect on any adaptations that need to be made and visualize how I’ll accomplish that tomorrow.
The next morning the iterative process ensues and the loop continues.
It’s a never ending process of improvement, which is what life should be all about.
Are you leveraging a journaling process to help you improve day-to-day? How would applying the Direct, Iterate, and Adapt process change your practice?
To your success,
Nate
