One of my superpowers, yes you have them too, is the ability to learn from other people's examples.
Good examples, bad examples, it doesn’t matter.
It’s a gift I likely picked up from my mom as she was the youngest of five kids, and I was the youngest of four.
I can vividly remember times in my life when she’d pull me aside to point out something one of my siblings did well or well… not so well.
I remember her not just pointing out what they did or didn’t do, but asking me what I could learn from it, if I wanted to be seen that way, or if I could learn from it and do better.
She’d point out how it would affect them now and in the future. How it would affect their relationships and, although not phrased this way, their status.
My mom was a great teacher and I’m truly blessed by that.
She highlighted that although I was younger and at a completely different stage in my life, this wasn’t a disadvantage. If anything it was a massive advantage and a big one at that.
It wasn’t something that only happened in relation to my siblings either. It was anytime she saw an example she could highlight and help me learn.
And, perhaps even more importantly as I look back on it, it was never about the person. What she pointed out was never gosip.
It was a reflection on the actions they took, the choices they made, and the reality of what those choices lead to, and then asking me to reflect on those things and decide how I would ask when in similar situations.
It was a way of helping me to future pace myself and decide there in those moments how I’d choose to respond.
It was a great lesson, or series of lessons, that I will be eternally grateful for.
And, it’s turned into one of my superpowers?
If you think about your superpowers, do you know where they came from and if you do, have you thanked that person for helping you to develop them?
Death - Before - Dishonor
To your success,
Nate
