Have you ever stopped to consider just how many transitional moments you experience throughout your day?
Whether you’re transitioning from asleep to awake or from just realizing your conscious to asking yourself what you need to do after you use the restroom, or later in the day transitioning from lunch back to work, we all experience countless transitions throughout our day.
Oftentimes these moments get lost in the minutia of the day and are processed through our unconscious minds as we transition from thought to thought and activity to activity.
One thing I’ve been reflecting on lately is what would happen if we became more consciously aware of these moments.
And, what would happen if we applied the Direct - Adapt - Iterate process to these moments?
If each time we noticed a transitional moment we took that brief millisecond to ask ourselves what direction we want to go with whatever it is we’re transitioning to.
As a dad, these moments are precious because I’m often transitioning from play to work or work to play, with every iteration in between.
And as an entrepreneur that works from home, to me it’s not about work life balance, it’s about managing myself through the transitions.
The more I can direct my state, and adapt with each iteration to improve and get better, the more control I gain of myself, my time, my presence, and the effect that has on those around me.
So what transitions are you experiencing?
Death - Before - Dishonor
To your success,
Nate
P.S. If you’d like to try an interesting thought experiment try keeping track of all the transitions you experience throughout the day. Next, rate yourself on a 1 - 5 scale how well you managed the transition with 5 being outstanding, you direct your mind on what you wanted to do and immediately attack it and 1 being “like shit” or an aimless wandering. Next, ask yourself how you could improve on that transition tomorrow. Last, make the adaptation and try again. Identify 2 or 3 areas where you want to get better at managing the transition and practice this for a few days to a week. Notice how much more intentional you are about your day and record the difference!
And, if you’re so bold, email me and let me know how it goes. I’d love to hear about your results!
