Aside from when you read it in Reflections 046, had you ever heard the phrase “The map is not the territory”?
It’s the fifth key assumption of NLP and it brings up two very interesting points to Reflect on.
The first is that we all create our own, highly personalized maps of the world.
Your map is your map and my map is my map.
Your customers' maps are their maps, your kids' maps are theirs.
Everybody’s map is their own.
Almost like it’s their own unique fingerprint.
But unlike our actual fingerprints that can be used to unlock things like your phone, or safes, this unique finger print… this map… is the key to understanding the way someone processes the world around them.
It’s their own personalized gps.
It determines whether something is good or bad, sad or happy, noble or disgraceful.
Getting curious about understanding other people's maps is the first key to endless curiosity.
It’s the key to untold levels of connection, rapport, and influence.
But… as the fifth key assumption states, it’s just the map, and not the actual territory.
The second interesting point is that it’s not real. It’s just a map.
Just as an actual map is only a representation of the terrain and not the terrain itself.
Your map, my map, your customers maps, your kids maps, everyone’s maps are just that, a representation of the world and not the world itself.
Recognizing these two things unlocks more than I could ever share in this Reflection.
What has reading and understanding this unlocked for you?
Death - Before - Dishonor
To your success,
Nate
