Do you have SOP’s (Standard Operating Procedures) in your life and business?
If not, it’s time to get off the hamster wheel, and start getting these things in place.
When I was at The Edge Mastermind last month, one of the speakers walked us through the creation of SOP’s within our businesses.
As entrepreneurs it’s easy to get lost running back and forth from task to task.
Changing hats and roles every chance we get and never taking the time to actually document the roles and responsibilities that exist within the business, what the success factors are, and the processes we go through.
The challenge when we don’t document these things is that when we finally do go to scale it feels like an insurmountable obstacle so we either never do it or we hire and fire without ever realizing the problem isn’t the people it’s us.
We have to take personal responsibility for not documenting the roles and their responsibilities, clearly articulating what success looks like, and then building out the procedures for someone to execute on.
Without those things in place it’s an impossible task, and yet we do it.
As entrepreneurs it’s in our nature to just do what needs to be done, but there's a phrase my mom says that sticks with me. She’d say “I’m an Indian not a chief”.
Well, we’re chiefs. And we can’t expect the rest of the tribe to know exactly what they need to do and how they need to do it unless we provide clear guidance and instructions on how.
Having been in the Marine Corps, I know this. As you can imagine we have SOPs for everything. Yes, that too.
So instead of going on a long rant of how to develop an SOP, let me simply suggest you google how the Marine Corps does it.
If you don’t like that, google how someone else does it.
Find a system, way, method of developing SOPs that works for you and then create an SOP around how to create an SOP.
And if you think I’m only talking about SOPs for your business, you’d be wrong. SOP’s can apply in every area of life and as Jocko Willink says Discipline Equals Freedom.
Get disciplined around your SOP’s and watch how much freedom that creates.
Death - Before - Dishonor
To your success,
Nate
