Have you ever heard of the OODA Loop?
If not, you’re missing out.
Air Force Colonel John Boyd developed the OODA Loop back in 1986 and refined it in 1995.
It’s an information-processing framework designed to help pilots improve their dog fighting. It’s now used by many organizations worldwide.
I learned it in the Marine Corps, as it’s become a cornerstone for fast thinking processes everywhere.
OODA, stands for Observe - Orientate - Decide - Act
The basic premise is that when you first enter a situation you Observe.
Whether that be entering a room or starting a sales call, you must observe what’s around you.
Next you Orientate. Based on what you’ve observed and your past repertoire of learnings, you orientate. You “position” yourself based on your strategic options.
Next you Decide. You determine your course of action based on your observations and orientation.
Last, you Act, based on your decision and the process starts again.
It’s an iterative loop.
You Observe, Orientate, Decide, and Act. And based on your actions, you Observe and start the process over again.
It’s a great process to be aware of and run alongside our success process.
You determine your Prime Directive. You Direct your mind based on what you’d like to do or the gap you’d like to close. You Adapt based on your repertoire of learnings from previous iterations. And you Iterate.
Once you Iterate, you Observe how well you’re moving in your desired Direction.
You Orientate and Decide which Adaptations you’ll apply based on your Observations.
And, you Act/Iterate.
The process then loops and you continue on your path to success.
Combining the OODA Loop with our DAI Success Philosophy is a powerful combination.
But, it’s not the only area where you can apply the OODA Loop. As you reflect on this process, where else could you apply it?
Note: Whoever can cycle through the loops the fastest wins!
Death - Before - Dishonor
To your success,
Nate
